Constructed over a five year period from 1826 to 1832 by the Royal Engineers and a host of Irish labourers, the Rideau Canal was initially designed to serve as a military route linking Montreal to Kingston on Lake Ontario. Covering a distance of some 200 kilometres and comprised of 47 locks, the canal served no useful military purpose, although commercial traffic made use of the waterway through to the World War I period. The canal is presently used for recreational purposes (R.F. Legget, "Rideau Canal", Canadian Encyclopedia, p. 1870; National Archives of Canada, Government Archives Division, General Inventory Series, Records of the Department of Railways and Canals, RG 43, Canal Records).
The federal government agency charged with the responsibility for the construction and maintenance of canals in Canada, including the Rideau Canal, has existed since 1879 as the Department of Railways and Canals, and since 1936 as the Department of Transport. In 1972, the administrative responsibility for the Rideau Canal and five other historically significant canal systems was transferred from the Department of Transport to the then National Parks Service. The operational and administrative records contained within this accession originate with the Rideau Canal Office at Smiths Falls and include water level and water control records, operational files from the "Canal Services"-4000 block of the Department of Transport's file classification system, engineering contract files, realty service site licences, and a wide range of administrative and operational Parks Canada, central registry files.
