HS prefix - Historical Section [graphic material]
Date:[1914-1919].Reference:R611-456-X-E, RG150, RG9-IIIType of material:PhotographsFound in:Archives / Collections and FondsItem ID number:4594510Date(s):[1914-1919].Place of creation:No place, unknown, or undeterminedExtent:1087 photographsLanguage of material:EnglishScope and content:The Historical Section (HS) was created during the First World War as a branch of the Canadian War Records Office (CWRO). This section was tasked with compiling war diaries, records, photographs, badges, awards, and other material that would assist in writing an official history of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) during the First World War. In Canada, it was headed up by Brigadier-General Ernest A. Cruikshank, an amateur historian. The Historical Section was later accompanied by the Canadian War Narrative Section (CWNS), a branch of the CWRO tasked with writing an official narrative of the Canadian contributions in the Last Hundred Days.
Although it can be presumed the photographs within the HS prefix were intended to be a visual document of the war to accompany the official war history, it is unclear how these particular photographs were originally selected and arranged, and whether they can all be attributed to official HS photographer Sgt. Herbert John Unwin. These photographs include images of celebrations, weddings, hospitals, cemeteries, and ca. 860 soldier portraits.Provenance:Additional information:Source of title:The "HS" prefix series is from the "Historical Section" of the Canadian War Records Office.Custodial history:The photographic collection of the Canadian War Records Office was transferred from London, England, to the Department of Militia and Defence in Ottawa in May, 1919.
