In the 1960s, the Space Research Facilities Branch of the NRC was created to provide services to scientists engaged in upper atmosphere and space research using sounding rockets, balloons and ground-based instruments, as well as procurement of rocket motors, design and operation of temporary and permanent launching facilities, acquisition and preparation of data, and activities related to instrumental rocket payloads. In a 1970s re-organization the area was re-named the Canada Centre for Space Science.
