GRIZZLE FONDSAccession:2007-0163Media:SoundPart:1 of 1Production date:1987-10-01/1987-11-30Production responsibility:Stanley Grizzle (Interviewer)Description:Theodore Stanley King relays his experiences as a sleeping car porter while also speaking to those of his father. In addition to discussing the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP), and some of its important union leaders, he recalls the deep solidarity between junior and senior porters in Calgary, all of whom worked hard to ensure equality in the distribution of work in the postwar period. He ends the interview by noting how the BSCP led to upward mobility in his family. Melvin Crump [begins at 00:22:00], whose family came to Keystone, Alberta, from Oklahoma in 1911 via the Homestead Act, details his daily experiences as a sleeping car porter for the Canadian Pacific Railway, which began during World War II. He shares the pride he took in his job as a porter and pays particular attention to how little sleep he got prior to the creation of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. In recounting why he left his job in 1954, he details the technological changes that were afoot in the railway, as the CPR transitioned from steam to diesel engines. This development led to the loss of his job, and mass unemployment in some districts. He ends the interview by recalling memorable incidents from his time on the rails. Essex Silas Richard ‹ €Dick‹ € Bellamy [Second sound file, begins at 00:27:12] recounts how he was recruited by the Canadian Pacific Railway while he was a student at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee in 1927. He came to work for the summer and never returned, labouring for the company for 40 years. He then discusses working conditions before the creation of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and some of the key union leaders who were integral to the movement.
