Sub-sub series is historical ice charts in paper and electronic format (tiff) from the Canadian Ice Service covering two regions: Northern and Southern.

The charts are also considered part of the official or unofficial dataset. Official dataset charts were produced from 1959-1974. These charts were created after the operational period had elapsed and acted as a weekly summary chart. The charts integrate all ice observations available for specific historical dates arbitrarily defined as one week apart beginning January 1st. The charts contain annotations on ice conditions, primarily ice age and concentration, illustrated through meteorological symbols and text. The charts were used to generate the Canadian Ice Service's first East Coast and Arctic atlases. Unofficial charts were primarily produced prior to 1959, although there are some dated as late as 1963. These charts contain weekly ice information as well and have historical climatological value. However, they are not considered part of the official dataset.

The southern historical charts cover the following areas: the Eastern Seaboard, Hudson Bay, Foxe Basin, Hudson Strait, and Davis Strait. There are 815 charts from 1959-1974 for the official dataset. The unofficial historical charts are from 1956-1959 and total 69 charts.

The northern historical charts cover the High Arctic and Western Arctic Regions, including the Beaufort Sea. There are 402 charts for 1959-1974 official dataset. There are 28 unofficial historical charts from 1958-1963. Twenty-five of the charts are from 1958 . The remaining three charts are for the winters of 1961-1963 which were prepared from reconnaissance missions that were flown over a period of time to collect ice information in preparation for the break-up in the spring.

Accompanying material note:

Also includes two digital text files (Mircosoft RTF and Word Document) on ice codes and interpreting Canadian ice charts. The files describe symbology used to illustrate ice amount and age/thickness. One file is for charts produced prior to and including 1965. The second file is for charts from 1967 to 1981. The files may include text, graphics and example charts.
