File consists of two images related to Louis Riel and two of the hanging of Stanislas Lacroix (also spelled Stanislaus). The first image of Riel is of him addressing the jury at his trial, and the second is the reading of the trial's verdict. Louis Riel's trial took place in July 1885. The original photographs were taken by Oliver Buell. The hanging of Stanislas Lacroix took place on March 21st, 1902 in Hull, Quebec. It is said to be the last publicly viewed execution in Canada. The photograph was taken by Napoléon Bélanger.

Louis Riel (1844-1885) was a Métis leader, politician, and teacher. He led the Red River Resistance (or Red River Rebellion) in 1869 and the North West Resistance (or North West Rebellion) in 1885. In 1885, Riel was convicted of treason and executed. Since then his contributions to the development of the Métis Nation, the founding of Manitoba, and Canadian Confederation have been recognized. In 1992, Riel was recognized by Parliament as the founder of Manitoba.
