Description:

Program five in the Galloway series shows three black and white Associated Screen News films produced between 1933 and 1952. CARNIVAL ON SKATES was filmed at Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto in 1932. Featured were top world skaters, including Canada's brother and sister combination, Constance Wilson-Samuel and Montgomery Wilson. Described as "ballet on skates", the show consisted of 300 skaters and a full orchestra. Filmed with hypersensitized film which was developed in that year, the skaters' movements were captured in normal arena lighting. BORDERLINE CASES is a 1948 dramatization of the consequences and relationships developed due to the unprotected Canada/U.S.A. border and shows examples of cities, homes, buildings and roads that are divided by the 49th parallel; the interdependent coexistence between border towns such as St. Stephen, in New Brunswick and Calais, Maine; and the International Legion Band that consisted of Canadian and American members. ROARING GAME, filmed in 1952 at Regina, Saskatchewan, looks at the enthusiasm for the sport of curling among Regina's children. They are shown making their own cement "jam tin" rocks and curling on rinks at school. Regina is said to be Canada's "hotbed" of curling. <30mn>
