The globe was a personal gift from Francois Mitterrand, President of France, to the Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney, Prime Minister of Canada, given in 1987.

Cartouche on the globe refers to Fernand Pouillon, cartographer and editor & to Madeleine Benoit-Guyot, director of research.

The total number of editions is not known. It is possible that several such globes were produced for the French government to be given as gifts to Heads of State.

The globe rests on a wooden octagonal turned stand which is comprised of two horizontal rings measuring 126 cm. in width. The turned stand is upheld by eight ornately decorated wooden supports. The pivot rests on a stirrup. The globe is encircled by an ungraduated brass meridian ring. The horizon circle on the wooden cradle is decorated with two rows of national flags and signs of the zodiac. The circle, as well, is embellished with notations listing a number of inventions and scientific discoveries between 1871 and 1985.

Accession was transferred in September 1995 from the Manuscript Division. Manuscript Division acquired the material from Brian Mulroney in December 1994.
