Photographs from the Canadian Government Motion Picture Bureau classification system [graphic material]
Date:1921-1941.Reference:R1196-12-3-EType of material:PhotographsFound in:Archives / Collections and FondsItem ID number:205818Date(s):1921-1941.Bilingual equivalent:Place of creation:CanadaExtent:ca. 17,508 photographs b&wLanguage of material:EnglishScope and content:The sub-series consists of records from the Canadian Government Motion Picture Bureau (CGMPB) classification system. This classification system is a thematic alphanumeric sequence with a letter prefix indicating the subject classification of a particular photograph or set of photographs. The photographs came under the control of the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) when the Still Photography Division of the CGMPB was shifted to the NFB. The NFB maintained this classification system for these photographs and used this system of classification for new photographs until ca. 1944/45.
The photographs are predominantly of glass, nitrate, diacetate and safety negatives, lantern slides and prints that were produced or maintained by the CGMPB and the NFB between 1921 and ca. 1945. There are photographs from the Royal Tour of 1939, state visits, portraits of Prime Ministers, Canadians engaged in various social and working activities, agriculture, Canadian industry, and tourism, etc.
This series also includes photographs taken by other government institutions such as Immigration and Colonization. These records are identified in the linked accession records.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Canadian Government Motion Picture Bureau : The Canadian Government Motion Picture Bureau (CGMPB) was created on April 1, 1923 when it was renamed from the Exhibits and Publicity Bureau. It remained in the Department of Trade and Commerce. Its main role was to take motion pictures and photographic stills to promote Canada's natural resources, industry and manufacturing as well as immigration and tourism as well as to provide film and photographic developing and printing services. It worked collaboratively with various government departments. In 1941, the film side of the Canadian Government Motion Picture Bureau merged with the National Film Board by virtue of Order-in-Council P.C. 3549 (11 June 1941) and the activities of the Still Photographic Division of CGMPB were absorbed by the Still Photography Division of the National Film Board by virtue of Order-in-Council P.C. 6047 (8 August 1941).Additional information:Custodial history:Some of these records were transferred by the CGMPB to the Public Archives of Canada and others were transferred by NFB and later antecedent institutions. Much of this material was acquired in the 1971-271 accession, along with other images from the Still Photography Division of the NFB.Arrangement note:This series description and arrangement was altered as part of a re-arrangement and re-description project in 2019/2020. Some of these photographs, items and accession records were previously arranged in the Still photo division sub-series.Container note(s):67 : Nitrate - Previously box RV6 183 barcode 2000921035
