The majority of the charges relate to intoxication or with providing or obtaining intoxicants. An amendment to the Indian Act in 1884 made it a felony for status Indians (First Nations) to enter a licensed establishment, or to buy or drink alcohol. It also became illegal to sell alcohol to a First Nations person.
