Miller, Alfred Jacob, 1810-1874 : Alfred Jacob Miller (born Baltimore 1810, died Baltimore 1874) studied under Thomas Sully and in Europe. He went west in 1837, and upon his return executed a set of paintings which are now in the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore.

General note:

Received from Agnes Sara Hargreaves Jardine (1877-1961), Chesterknowes, Selkirk, Scotland. Mrs. Jardine was married to Brigadier-General James Bruce Jardine (1870-1955) and had inherited the watercolours and albums from her father, Sir Alexander Hargreaves Brown(1844-1922), the 1st Baronet of Broome Hall (Capel, Surrey). In 1867 Alexander Hargreaves Brown commissioned Alfred Jacob Miller to produce 40 watercolours based on the artist's 1837 western travels.

Accompanying material note:

The artist file (705-5) contains b&w photographic reproductions of Miller watercolours held in the collections of the Boatmen's National Bank of St. Louis in Missouri. The Public Archives of Canada obtained these reproductions in 1970; they are for consultation purposes only.
