The earlier collections were created when Pritchard was editorial cartoonist for the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix, a position he held until 1988. Later works were created on a free-lance basis.
The fonds is primarily national in scope. Prime Ministers depicted include Pierre Elliott Trudeau, John Turner, Brian Mulroney, Kim Campbell and Jean Chrétien. Many Cabinet members holding key portfolios are parodied. Significant among these are Lloyd Axworthy, Lucien Bouchard, Sheila Copps, John Crosbie, Paul Martin, Don Mazankowski and Michael Wilson. Referring to federal- and inter-provincial relations, Pritchard portrays Premiers Robert Bourassa, Bill Davis, Mike Harris, Ralph Klein, Frank McKenna, Jacques Parizeau, David Peterson, and Brian Tobin. Some of the more frequently recurring national and provincial issues of note are the economy, the plight of the elderly and disenfranchised, government cut-backs, education, homelessness, social programs, health care, unemployment, the growing deficit of the 1990s, oil prices, the falling dollar, election and leadership races, and the threat of separation and the Quebec referendum. The works are arranged chronologically within each accession.
On the international scene, some of the topics the artist frequently examines encompass Mid-East tensions and peace talks, armed conflicts throughout the world including Africa and Central America, famine, drug smuggling, dictatorships such as those of Ferdinand Marcos, General Jaruzelski and Augusto Pinochet, the disollution of the Russian empire and the collapse of the Baltic States.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Pritchard, Denny, 1935-2000 : Denny Pritchard was born in 1935 in Hamilton, Ontario. He worked for several years in the auto plants in Ontario. In 1975, he began cartooning as a freelancer until he joined the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix as their editorial cartoonist. He remained with the Star-Phoenix until 1988 when he moved to Perth and resumed cartooning on a free-lance basis. His work was then frequently printed in newspapers across Canada.
Pritchard's style was a unique one which focussed more on situations than on caricature portraits. He was considered by his peers as being one of the funniest cartoonists in Canada. His humanitarian concerns are evident in his frequent depiction of the plight of the elderly and the poor. Denny Pritchard died in Perth, Ontario, in March 2000.
