Series consists of a wide range of marine wreck and casualty records created and/or maintained by Marine Casualty Investigations and its predecessors. The series includes central registry files relating exclusively to wrecks, casualties and salvage, including wreck investigations (9704 Block), as well as records not filed using the central registry system. The latter include the following: casualty investigation records; registers of wrecks and casualties; wreck reports; a casualty inquiries index; an index to marine casualty investigation records and wreck reports; and various records of investigations into wrecks.

Canada. Marine Casualty Investigations : Prior to the creation of the Department of Transport, the Dominion Wreck Commissioner was responsible for collecting wreck statistics and conducting inquiries into causes of shipwrecks and casualties. By 1936, the function of marine investigations and salvages was administered by the Marine Investigations and Wrecks Division of the Nautical and Pilotage Division (later Nautical Services) in Marine Services. In 1970, the Canadian Marine Transportation Administration (CMTA) was established to provide marine terminal facilities and services, manage all operational, developmental, and regulatory activities of the department in support of marine transportation, and develop ports and marine commerce in Canada. The CMTA is responsible for conducting investigations into marine accidents; and this is the specific function of Marine Casualty Investigations. In 1985 the Chief of Marine Casualty Investigations reported to the Director, Harbours and Ports. In 1990 the responsibilities of the Marine Casualty Investigation Unit of Transport Canada were assumed by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.
