Scope and content:

Series consists of artwork which includes juvenilia, student drawings and exercises, sketchbooks, preliminary drawings, a mock-up of "The Passion of St. Matthew", tracings, and other material. Among the records are historical and contemporary prints by Kurelek and others. Subjects include Kurelek's travels in Canada and elsewhere and views of Stonewall, Manitoba.

Additional material received in 2004 included three drawings of the late artist's daughter as an infant, a finished drawing of a scene in a Hong Kong maternity hospital and a children's ward in a South African hospital, further juvenilia and student drawings, sketches of religious parables, a large collage of a proposed mural for the Spadina-St.Clair subway station in Toronto, and a sketchbook of scenes taking place at the Dachau concentration camp.

General note:

Material received in 1997 was from William Kurelek Enterprises Ltd. through Kurelek's widow, Jean Kurelek, of Toronto, Ontario.

Custodial history:

Donated by Jean Kurelek to the National Archives of Canada in 1997 and in 2004. Three additional drawings were also donated by the late artist's daughter Cathy Kurelek in 2004.
