Notable are 43 sketchbooks, dating from 1941 to ca. 1999, some of which contain hundreds of drawings. These drawings were frequently a means of working out formal concerns which the artist brings to her paintings - the mixing of media, textural juxtaposition and tonal contrasts. Many of the drawings served as direct fodder for later paintings. Included are sketches of family members including her parents and, often, her daughter Käthe; figure studies from the model; images of intimate couples; landscapes; interior scenes with plants; abstract studies; images of the harlequin figure; faces covered by masks; scenes and props from the artist's studio; water and beach scenes; and images of sunflowers.
Also included are over eighty limited edition prints which range from small intimate images to large textured silkscreens. The fonds also contains an edition of a collaborative work by Caiserman-Roth and Friedhelm Lach entitled "Creativisme" (1980) and another joint limited edition work entitled "Pulsion / Pulse" (1983), co-created with Quebec poet Louise Gareau-DesBois.
The fonds also includes a number of drawings done by Caiserman-Roth when she was suffering from the debilitating effects of Alzheimer's Disease. They mirror themes and artistic conventions which preoccupied her throughout her career. These items have not been individually catalogued but are numbered R2509-40 to R2509-201.
A selection of printing plates, matching etchings in the collection, are included., A 2008 accrual added a large number of works by other artists, frequently friends and colleagues of students of Caiserman-Roth. Of note are works by Alexandre Bercovitch, Bruno and Molly Bobak, Rita Briansky, Reva Brooks, Robert Gwathmey, Stanely Hayter, Robert Langstadt, Ann McCall, Moe Reinblatt, David Shapiro and Tony Urquhart. The donation also included a limited edition portfolio of thirteen works, entitled Hommage à Albert Dumouchel, by such artists as Pierre Ayot, Vera Frenkel, Guy Montpetit, and Serge Tousignant.Additional information:General note:Only a selected number of items from the sketchbooks have been described at the item-level and provided with a negative or e-copy number.Container note(s):388 : Un-numbered printing plates
