Until the beginning of the twentieth century, correspondence received by the Post Office was numbered consecutively from 1 to 10,000 with each series/group of 10,000 spanning several years. While the correspondence is consecutively numbered, only a small proportion of the records survives.
The records in this sub-sub-series also include a small amount of unnumbered, chronologically arranged correspondence received by the Office of the Deputy Postmaster General for the period March 1885 to November 1886.Additional information:Source of title:Title is based on the contents of the sub-sub-series.Accruals:No further accruals are expected.Related material:The registers described in the "Registers to letters received" sub-sub-series (MIKAN 133413, RG3-B-2-3) serve as a finding aid for the numbered correspondence only.
