The RAIC was incorporated by an Act of Parliament in 1908 as "The Architectural Institute of Canada". An alliance with the Royal Institute of British Architects was completed in 1909, and royal assent was given to add 'Royal' to the name. The purposes of the RAIC are: to provide services to the public as a national organization; to establish and maintain a bond between the members of the Institute and to recognize and encourage excellence in the practice of architecture; to establish and maintain liaison with other environmental design professions and learned societies, nationally and internationally, on matters of common concern.
In 1941 the College of Fellows was created to honour members of the RAIC and distinguished laymen, to serve as the senior advisory body of the Institute, and to encourage research and scholarship. In fulfilment of the last objective, the College of Fellows Scholarship was established in 1948 and is open to graduates of Canadian schools of architecture. The RAIC administers award programs recognizing excellence in the field of architecture. Awards have focused on built projects, lifelong achievement, distinguished contributions to the profession (fellowships), architectural education, and excellence in the allied arts. There are the Governor General's Awards for architecture, a bi-annual awards program which recognizes outstanding achievement in recently completed structures built by architects registered in Canada, and the RAIC Gold Medal, the highest award for outstanding contribution to the profession. Other awards included the Allied Arts Medal for excellence in an art allied to architecture, and the Student Medal, administered through the RAIC Foundation and offered annually to the graduating student with the outstanding design project and thesis in each school of architecture in Canada.Additional information:General note:Received in 1976 and 2018 from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.
