Scope and content:

Series consists of three sub-series which represent the three file classification systems used by the Royal Canadian Navy. RCN Headquarters maintained these records as central registries, holding the majority of the files in a central location, while new documents were circulated in temporary dockets for action before filing. Some files dealing with a specific subject or function were held by the responsible office and transferred to the central registry when the records became inactive. In the cases where the records have been identifiable as being held in a separate office, they are described in that context.
