0.20 m of textual recordsLanguage of material:EnglishScope and content:Sub-sub-series consists of Notifications to the Hudson's Bay Company. Letters patent were generally not issued by the Dominion government to the Hudson's Bay Company for lands granted in the North-West Territories under the terms of surrender. Under the North-West Territories Land Titles Act (57-58 Victoria, c. 28, 1894), the Minister of the Interior was only required to notify the registrar of the North-West Territories that certain lands had been granted to the Company. These Notifications were to be "...accepted by the registrar as equivalent to letters patent in favour of the company for the lands falling to them in such a township or part of a township. This obviates much of the clerical labour connected with the issuing of patents" (Canada. Department of the Interior. Annual Report of the Department of the Interior for the Year 1895, Ottawa, 1896, pg. xiv). Although not expressly stated, the Notifications are deemed to have operated as a conveyance of both surface and under rights, under the interpretation handed down by the Deputy Minister of the Department of Justice. The intent was prescribed in Section 5 of the Deed of Surrender to the Crown from the Governor of Company of Adventurers of England Trading into Hudson Bay, dated 19 November, 1869, covering Rupert's Land and the North-West Territory.
This sub-sub-series includes notifications on grant numbers 7 to 2727, dated from 16 March 1873 to 30 May, 1911.
This sub-sub-series also contains aperture cards which consist of images of original registers. Each aperture card consists of a microfiche image held in a paper index card. In most cases each image is one page of the original register. The registers are also known as RG15 aperture card books 40 and 41. There are two copies of these aperture card books. They serve as an index to the notifications. Each entry in the books give the grant number, number of acres granted, the land description, the date of the transfer, and general administrative remarks.Additional information:Source of title:Title is based on the contents of the sub-sub-series.Custodial history:The aperture cards in this sub-sub-series were created by a successor to the Department of the Interior sometime between 1948 and 1970. They were copied from original registers and ledgers and the originals were then destroyed. The aperture cards were then transferred to the National Archives in the early 1970s.
RG15 Aperture Card books were available in the LAC reference room until January 2023.Accruals:No further accruals are expected.Source:GovernmentFormer archival reference no.:RG15-D-II-11-a -
