Series consists of registry records from the Manitoba Penitentiary, Stony Mountain. These records are part of a much larger collection of prison registers for the Manitoba Penitentiary that are stored in the Federal Records Centre in Winnipeg. The records consist mainly of letterpress copies of correspondence which are sometimes badly faded and, in some instances, completely unreadable. Included are the Warden's letter books (1872-1913), Accountant's letter books (1878-1902), Surgeon's letter books (1885-1897) and Inspector's minute books (1882-1889). Also included are Inmate Admittance Books (1871-1921).

Stony Mountain Penitentiary : The Manitoba Penitentiary and Asylum, which was originally located at Lower Fort Garry, was founded in 1871 as a provincial institution. It was taken over by the federal government in August 1874, and was used as a federal penitentiary until early in 1877. In January of that year, with the establishment of the federal penitentiary at Stony Mountain, Manitoba, the penitentiary facilities at Lower Fort Garry were abandoned.

In the early days, both at Lower Fort Garry, and at Stony Mountain, the institution also served as a lunatic asylum. This situation continued until February 1885 when a temporary provincial asylum was established at Lower Fort Garry. The asylum remained at that location until May 1886 when the new Provincial Asylum opened at Selkirk.

The registers have been microfilmed, for the most part, in the order they appear on the finding aid. But certain registers, which contain restricted material, have been put on separate microfilm reels. The restricted material includes the following registers: 11-18, 20 and 24-25.
