Date:1879-1906Reference:R610-158-5-E, RG43-B-1-3Type of material:Textual materialFound in:Archives / Collections and FondsItem ID number:134580Date(s):1879-1906Bilingual equivalent:Place of creation:No place, unknown, or undeterminedExtent:0.6 m of textual recordsLanguage of material:EnglishScope and content:Sub-sub-series consists of registers of papers filed maintained by the Canal Branch as part of its records-keeping operation. The registers record all correspondence received in the Branch by the number of the letter received, the date, the name of the correspondent, and the nature of the action taken. Beginning in July 1893 (Vol. 2841), the subject number was added to the information columns to serve as a cross-reference to the Journals (Series B-II-1, Vols. 1161 to 1255); in May 1901 (Vol. 2845), when the Branch adopted a numbered file records system, the file number was also added to the details recorded for each incoming letter. This system was continued until 1906, when the Branch converted its index to cards. The card index was maintained until Railways and Canals was transformed into the Department of Transport in 1936; however, the current whereabouts of this reference tool are unknown.Additional information:Source of title:Title is based on the contents of the sub-sub-series.Accruals:No further accruals are expected.Related material:The registers of papers filed for the period 1893-1906 (Vols. 2841-2847) also served as indices to the General (Series B-II-3, Vols. 1271-1274, 1792-1793) and Special Indexes (Series B-II-4, Vols. 1267-1270, 1794-1795, 1816-1817) by providing a link between the indexes and the journals. Researchers should also note that at some later date the records of the Branch were screened by departmental officials, resulting in the destruction of a large number of files; this is indicated in the papers filed. In instances where the records were retained and added to numbered subject files in Railways and Canals or even later to Department of Transport subject files, the file numbers have been noted.Source:GovernmentFormer archival reference no.:RG43-B-1-3 -
