Record information Correspondence received and subject files [textual record]
Date:1838-1936Reference:R610-156-1-E, RG43-B-I-1Type of material:Textual material, Architectural and technical drawingsFound in:Archives / Collections and FondsItem ID number:134579Date(s):1838-1936Bilingual equivalent:Place of creation:No place, unknown, or undeterminedExtent:87.0 m of textual recordsLanguage of material:EnglishScope and content:Sub-sub-series consists of numbered correspondence, files and documents created by the Canal Branch of the Department of Railways and Canals from its establishment in 1879 until the organization of the Department of Transport in 1936. These records include correspondence, memoranda and reports prepared by various departmental officials relating to all aspects of the administration, construction, operation and maintenance of canals under the jurisdiction of the branch, including early correspondence and documents created by the Board of Works and the Department of Public Works dating from 1838. These records also include subject files on related matters such as canal tolls, Sunday traffic, surveys, dredging, annual reports, estimates, organization of the branch and routine administrative matters.
Until 1901 all Canal Branch correspondence was registered with a letter and subject number, and the records were arranged according to one of 42 subject designations. A new records-keeping system was adopted in 1901, and while correspondence was still assigned a registration and subject number, the files themselves were numbered consecutively. Prior to 1901 the records consist largely of incoming correspondence; from that date until 1936 files generally include copies of outgoing correspondence.
This sub-sub-series also includes in Vols. 1156-1160, 1728-1735 a collection of unnumbered correspondence, documents and subject files that were never incorporated into the branch registry system. These records consist of claims, leases, indentures, reports, related correspondence and miscellaneous documents. A list has been compiled.Additional information:Source of title:Title is based on the contents of the sub-sub-series.Accruals:No further accruals are expected.Related material:Some early canal records, including pre-confederation correspondence, were retained by the Department of Transport after 1936 and are available in the 4000 file block; an extensive collection of canal records dating from the early nineteenth century to the 1970s is available in the Canal Division series (MIKAN 133879, R184-200-1-E)., For records created prior to 1901, contemporary finding aids are available and are described in the journals, registers and indexes sub-sub-series that are part of MIKAN 134578 (RG43-B-II). A list of the 42 subject areas and a list of the file numbers in our custody can be consulted in the Government Archives Division. Researchers should note that Vol. 2772 is a detailed description of the department's organization as it existed in 1930.Container note(s):2870 : originally part of volume 1450Source:GovernmentFormer archival reference no.:RG43-B-I-1 -
