Sub-series consists of registers and ledger cards of ships closed-out. From 1904 to 1964 the Ship Registration Division maintained a series of registers in which was recorded the name and registration details of vessels closed-out. Beginning in 1965, the Ship Registration Division abandoned the registers in favour of ships' ledger cards. These cards contain the same registration information as the registers of vessels closed-out.

Researchers should be aware of the Ship Registration Database. All information from the card indexes have been entered into the database and information regarding individual vessels listed in shipping registers acquired by the Archives after November 1992 were directly added to the database. This speciality database is available through the Reference Services Division and online in Collection Search.
