Date:1936-1971Reference:R216-713-4-E, RG22-A-1-bType of material:Textual materialFound in:Archives / Collections and FondsItem ID number:133156Date(s):1936-1971Place of creation:No place, unknown, or undeterminedExtent:2.0 m of textual recordsLanguage of material:EnglishScope and content:Sub-series consists of administrative records of the Deputy Minister's Office that were maintained in a special registry for Indian Affairs files. This registry used a duplex-numeric filing system somewhat similar to that of the Indian Affairs Branch. The first number was unique to the agency and the second number indicated the subject. The subjects include agency files covering schools, medical concerns, lands and estates. A series of files have the designation, "originals taken from files disposed of as copies of correspondence held on Branch Records". This has been described by departmental records staff as resulting from the change-over to a new classification. When the registry system was converted in 1971 files still within the physical control of the DMO were stripped of "original" material and placed in new file jackets. They were assigned the same responsibility code for location but an additional subject secondary was added. Under this system all subjects were placed on this single file, "xxx/1-1" for each agency (example Abitibi Indian Agency has such a file 371/1-1). There is another file relating to a specific subject 371/3 Medical file. Records which were already in the federal records centre did not undergo the stripping and consolidation on the 1-1 file therefore they will retain the original file number.Additional information:Source of title:Title is based on the contents of the sub-series.Accruals:No further accruals are expected.Source:GovernmentFormer archival reference no.:RG22-A-1-b -
