Caiserman, a founder and first General Secretary of the Canadian Jewish Congress. She began her art studies with Alexandre Bercovitch in Montreal and, in New York, at the Parsons School of Design and Art Students' League. She later studied at the Nova Scotia College of Art, and with the Quebec artist and printmaker Albert Dumouchel at l'École des Beaux-Arts 1961-1962.
She was awarded the O'Keefe Art Award to travel in Italy and France in 1950 and won a scholarship to the Allende Institute of Mexico in 1951. She also received the Centennial Medal, Canada Council awards, Hadassah Art Auction awards, and the Ninth Annual Award for the Arts from the I.J. Segal Funds. A painter and printmaker, Caiserman-Roth was a member of the Canadian Society of Graphic Art (1950), Canadian Group of Painters (1954), Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (1956), and the Canadian Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers (1968). She was also a member of le Conseil des artistes peintres du Québec and le Conseil québécois de l'estampe and was a founding member of the printmaking studio Atelier Graphia in Montreal.
Caiserman-Roth taught art in Canadian institutions commencing in the 1940s. She founded the Montreal Artists School (1948-1950) with her first husband, the artist Alfred Pinsky. She taught for many years at Sir George Williams College, Concordia University, and at the Saidye Bronfman Centre. She also taught at Queen's University, Mount Allison University, the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Mount Saint Vincent University, the Ontario College of Art, l'Université du Québec à Montréal, and the University of British Columbia.
Her first major sale was a painting to the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1949. Caiserman-Roth exhibited her work in most major cities in Canada and is represented in the Vancouver Art Gallery, University of British Columbia, Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon, Art Gallery of Hamilton, National Gallery of Canada, Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Musée des Beaux-Arts in Montreal, and some fifty other public collections in Canada. Concordia University organized a retrospective of her work in 1980: "Ghitta Caiserman-Roth: a retrospective view, 1947-1980". In March 2000, she was awarded the first Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts for Painting.
In 1988, she published "Ghitta Caiserman-Roth: drawings and paintings". In 1993, McGill-Queen's University Press published "Insights, Discoveries, Surprises; Drawing From The Model", co-written by Caiserman-Roth and Rhoda Cohen. Her work has been used to illustrate a number of books.
Her husband Max Roth pre-deceased her in 2001. The artist died in 2005, having suffered for several years from the debilitating effects of Alzheimer's Disease.
