Fonds is comprised of textual records, including correspondence with Ira Dilworth and Lawren Harris, financial records, journals, manuscripts of books and stories, addresses, notebooks, notes, manuscripts by others, other material, and National Gallery material.

Fonds contains photographs of Emily Carr and her pet bob-tail English Sheepdogs; and the Carr family home in Victoria, B.C., 1891-1910.

Fonds also contains a reproduction of an Emily Carr original entitled, "The Great Eagle, Skidegate, B.C.", reproduced 1991.

Additionally, the fonds contains a booklet with seven drawings done by Emily Carr and given to Mr. and Mrs. William H. Clarke of Toronto.

Carr, Emily, 1871-1945 : Born in Victoria, B.C., Emily Carr studied art in San Francisco, London, and Paris. She taught privately in Victoria and Vancouver between her own studies and illustrated for the Victoria Week, 1905. Discouraged by lack of public response, she abandoned her painting for many years while she managed a boarding house, 1913-1936, raised dogs, and made pottery. Her work was exhibited by the National Gallery in 1927, when she travelled east and met the Group of Seven, including Lawren Harris, who encouraged her to paint again.

Ill health caused her to turn to writing in later years, encouraged by Ira Dilworth, Regional Director of the C.B.C. in Vancouver, who became her literary editor and confidant. Klee Wyck, published in 1941, won the Governor-General's Award for non-fiction and was followed by The Book of Small, 1942, and The House of All Sorts, 1944, as well as other works published posthumously.

General note:

Textual records: The originals were acquired in 1976 and the microfilm and photocopies were prepared in 1979. A file of correspondence between Emily Carr and the National Gallery was copied from the originals in the National Gallery and presented to the National Archives in 1980.
Print: Emily Carr probably saw this eagle figure at Skidegate on her trips to the Queen Charlotte Islands in 1912 and 1928.
Photographs: The images were loaned to the National Archives of Canada and copied. The originals were returned to the lender.
