7 maps.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of the following series of textual records: Correspondence and memoranda concerning steamboats and river transport, and studies on the Athabasca Tar Sands, 1908-1971; Memoirs and notes, 1900-1945; Diaries, 1892-1899; and Scrapbooks and printed material, ca. 1914-1968.
The fonds contains original photographs depicting the life, family, career, and travels of Sidney Clarke Ells, [ca. 1880]-1969, and a copy of a photograph taken in 1969 of a model of an oil refinery in Alberta.
The fonds includes sketches for various publications; scenes of pioneer activities in Canada; legends and myths; logging and fishing; two portraits of Ells; and two greeting cards, n.d., 1935, 1969.
The fonds also contains maps of Northern Canada, n.d., 1958-1967.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Ells, Sidney Clarke, 1878-1971 : Sidney Ells was a mining engineer employed from 1901 to 1913 by various mining and railway companies to undertake geological explorations. In 1913 he joined the Department of Mines and, except for two years spent in the armed forces during the First World War, he remained with the Department until his retirement in 1945. The focus of his work was the exploration and development of the Alberta Tar Sands.
