Microfilmed material is located on microfilm reels M-3619 to M-3623, M-5466 to M-5471 and consists of correspondence, diaries, literary manuscripts, speeches, lectures and notes, personal records, memorabilia, election campaigns, Samuel Bronfman material, clippings and printed material, 1922-1979.

The fonds contains original and copied photographs depicting events in the life of A.M Klein, Bessie Klein (née Kozlov), David and Sophie Lewis, n.d., 1926, 1955.

The fonds also contains sound recordings of speeches by Klein about Israel and the displaced Jews, and the massacre of Jews in the Warsaw ghetto, and readings and excerpts of a radio play based on The Second Scroll and some of Mr. Klein's poems, 1949-1956. Also included are recordings of the proceedings of an A.M. Klein Memorial Evening held in Jerusalem, 10 October 1972.

Klein, A. M. (Abraham Moses), 1909-1972 : Born in the Ukraine, A.M. Klein spent most of his life in Montreal, where he studied at McGill University, graduating in 1930, and the University of Montreal, faculty of law, graduating in 1933. Klein became editor of The Canadian Jewish Chronicle in 1938 and was a spokesperson for the Jewish community. He began working as speechwriter for Samuel Bronfman, head of Seagram's and president of the Canadian Jewish Congress, in 1939. In the 1949 federal election, he ran unsuccessfully as C.C.F. candidate in the riding of Montreal-Cartier.

While a student at McGill, Klein met the McGill Fortnightly Review poets Leo Kennedy, F.R. Scott, A.J.M. Smith, and writer Leon Edel. In the 1940s he was associated with the poets of the little magazines Preview and First Statement, including P.K. Page, Irving Layton and Louis Dudek. Klein himself published four books of poetry, including Hath Not a Jew (1940), Poems (1944), The Hitleriad (1944) and The Rocking Chair and Other Poems (1948). He was also the author of a novel, The Second Scroll (1951).

In 1935 Klein married Bessie Kozlov. They had three children: Sandor, Colman and Sharon. Klein became ill in the early fifties, and stopped writing and retired from public life. He died in Montreal.

A.M. Klein won the Governor General's Award for poetry in 1948 and the Lorne Pierce Medal in 1957.

General note:

The material in volumes 1-34 was received in 1973 from A.M. Klein's sons, Sandor and Colman Klein of Montreal, Quebec. The material in volume 35 was received between 1974 and 1980 from various sources. The Annotated Books Series I were received in 1991 from Colman Klein, the Annotated Books Series II in 1991 from Colman and Sandor Klein through Zailig Pollock, and the Annotated Books Series III in 1991 from Sandor Klein (some of the books were at one time in the possession of Klein's daughter Sharon). Volumes 1-18 microfilmed in 1975 and volumes 19-35 in 1980.
PDF finding aid makes mention of a "general description of the papers". Researchers should consult the fonds level record in the MIKAN database for a general description of the fonds.
