3 photographs : b&w.Language of material:EnglishAdded language of material:English, InuktitutScope and content:Fonds consists of textual records inluding two notebooks and inserted pages kept by Archibald Fleming while at Kimmirut (formerly known as Lake Harbour), Baffin Island, Nunavut, 1909-1911, and three extracts from various sources. The first scribbler contains 59 pages of Inuit songs, in English and Inuktitut; the second, 32 pages of songs and language translations, some of which were written while Fleming attended "seances" by an angokok. The inserted pages contain material similar to that in the scribblers. The extracts, which appear to be copied by the widow of Fleming, Elizabeth Fleming, discuss Inuit shamanism.
Also included in fonds are three photographs depicting the Anglican All Saints' Cathedral in Aklavik (N.W.T.).Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Fleming, Archibald Lang, Bishop, 1883-1953 : Archibald L. Fleming, born in 1883 at Greenock, Scotland, began his theological studies in 1908 at Wycliffe College, Toronto and was ordained an Anglican Minister in 1913. Except for brief periods, he was a missionary to the Inuit of Baffin Island from 1909-1915. He was Archdeacon of the Arctic 1927-1933 and became the first Bishop of the Arctic, 1933-1948. Among his several books is the autobiography, "Archibald of the Arctic" (1956), published posthumously. The Canadian Who's Who, 1948.
