53 cm of textual records.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of records and photographs documenting the life of naturalist and author, Grey Owl. The fonds contains photographs of Grey Owl; portraits of Grey Owl and friends at Beaver Lodge, and the settlement called Bisco, 1971.
The fonds also contains textual material arranged into the following ten series: Grey Owl Notebooks; Grey Owl Notebooks (Additional); Grey Owl Correspondence; Grey Owl Correspondence (Additional); Clippings; Clippings (Additional); Anahareo Material; Somervell Collection; Somervell Collection (Additional); Smart Collection.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Grey Owl, 1888-1938 : Archibald Stansfeld Belaney, naturalist and author, was born in 1888 in Hastings, England, and first came to Canada in 1906, settling in northern Ontario. Claiming to be himself a halfbreed, in 1910 he married an Ojibwa, Angele Eguena. For many years, he earned a living as a trapper, guide and fireranger in the Temagami and Algoma districts. He went overseas with the Canadian Army in 1915 and was wounded in the war. During his convalescence in England, he married a childhood friend, Ivy Holmes, in 1917.
Soon after, Belaney returned to Canada, where he began to call himself Grey Owl and to assume Indian dress and customs. He married an Iroquois, Anahareo, who persuaded him to give up trapping and to raise beavers. Grey Owl subsequently became an ardent conservationist. The books and articles he wrote, such as Pilgrims of the Wild and The Adventures of Sajo and her beaver people, made him famous throughout Canada. He undertook two successful lecture tours of Great Britain in 1935 and 1937. In 1938, he died in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, where he had lived intermittently since 1931.Additional information:General note:The original material in the series Grey Owl Notebooks, Grey Owl Correspondence, Clippings, Anahareo Material, and Somervell Collection has been photocopied and the originals removed from circulation. Researchers must consult the photocopies. Note that there is some discrepancy between the extents of the original material and the photocopies which replace it, due to the nature of the original documents.
Part of the collection was received in 1972 from G.N. Irwin and part in 1976 and 1980 from Grey Owl's daughter, Dawn Bruce Richardson of British Columbia. The Somervell Collection was received in 1979 from Betty Somervell's son Jonathan de F. Somervell of Crook, England, through Dawn Bruce Richardson and in 1990 from Jonathan de F. Somervell and his sister Kristin Bonney of Llangollen, Wales, through Professor Donald Smith of Calgary, Alberta.
The Smart Collection was received in 1995 from Riding Mountain National Park through John Aldag. Some photocopied material was received in 1988 from Professor Donald Smith and in 1989 from Kathleen Munro of Salmon Arms, British Columbia, through Professor Smith.
