50 photographs b&w.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of Chamberlin's correspondence which includes several letters from John A. Macdonald and other prominent conservative politicians with whom he was on intimate terms. Many papers relate to the International Exhibition, 1861-1864. Included are drafts of lectures, notes, poetry and songs, a variety of business accounts, a map of military districts and divisions, ca. 1867 and material on Thomas D'Arcy McGee. This collection covers the period 1818-1894, and is available on microfilm (C-2332 to C-2334).
The fonds also includes albumen paper prints and cartes-de-visite photographs that are with an album. The cartes-de-visite depict portraits of British and European royalty, including the Prince of Wales and Queen Victoria; other portraits include Archdeacon Leach, Thomas D. King, Alex Begg, A. Grant, Bishop Fulford, G.E. Cartier, John Young Brown, W. Logan, T. Sterry Hunt, Mathewson, Roy, and costumed actors. Photographs are by Wellington Chase, Halifax, Nova Scotia, William Notman, J.L. Demers, J. Martin, all of Montréal, Quebec, Stiff Brothers, Ottawa, Ontario, Ellisson & Co. Quebec City, Quebec, Stiff Brothers, Ottawa, Ontario, Ellison & Co., Quebec City, Quebec, and British and American photographers.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Chamberlin, B. (Brown), 1827-1897 : Brown Chamberlin, publisher and politician, was one of the publishers of the Montreal Gazette from 1853 to 1867. He was also Honorary Secretary, 1857-1862 and President, 1862-1865, of the Board of Arts and Manufacturers. He was appointed one of the Canadian Commissioners for the International Exhibition in London, England, 1862. He represented Missisquoi in the House of Commons 1867-1870, when he retired from political life. He was appointed Queen's Printer, and held this office until 1891.
Chamberlin also took an active interest in the militia and held the rank of Colonel in the 60th Battalion Missisquoi Volunteers. For his service during the Fenian raids he was created a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.).
