Under the Official Languages Act, the Commissioner is a linguistic ombudsman who investigates complaints and acts to protect the language rights of all Canadians. In this regard, records in this accession cover policies and procedures, departmental responsibilities and include correspondence of appreciation, complaints, inquiries, accounting of conferences, meetings, symposia, Management Committee symposia or colloquia. Corresponding to the Commissioner's duties of linguistic auditor with respect to the equal status of the official languages, the records include correspondence on legal matters, inquiries, questions and returns and departmental audits. Lastly as a promoter of language equality, the Commissioner is empowered to take initiatives to further language reform.
