The records document the observation, recording and forecasting of weather data and phenomena, the development and testing of meteorological instruments, scientific research, the establishment and operation of meteorological stations, environmental conferences, Western Bulletin Service, agriculture, hydrology, northern studies, climatology, medals and awards, pollution, solar radiation, standard time, ozone investigations, and other meteorological and environmentally related subjects.Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Canadian Meteorological Service : When the Department of Transport was established in 1936, it included a Meteorological Division which was responsible for providing a complete weather service for Canada. It included a Forecast Section, Climatological Section, Physics Section, and a Magnetic Section. In 1960, following a major reorganization of the Department, the Meteorological Branch became a part of Air Services and consisted of the following operational units: Forecast Division; Basic Weather Division; Instrument Division; Climatological Division; Research and Training Division; and Administrative Division. By 1970, the Meteorological Branch had become the Canadian Meteorological Service. It was headed by an Administrator and provided meteorological service and ice information to a broad spectrum of segments of the national economy and promoted the application and development of meteorological services. In 1971, the Canadian Meteorological Service was transferred to the newly-created Department of Environment and was renamed the Atmospheric Environment Service.
