9 mapsScope and content:Fonds consists of correspondence, diaries and survey notebooks, memoranda and manuscripts dealing with William Ogilvie's surveys in the Northwest, Blackfoot and Sioux Indians, mining, conditions in Alaska and the Yukon, and the Klondike gold rush, 1846-1912.
The fonds also contains photographs, n.d., 1887-[ca. 1910], depicting views of the Yukon and Alaska, including a shot of the Ogilvie Bridge over the Klondike River near Dawson City; an Inuit woman known as "The Madonna of the Yukon"; log cabins; a horse-drawn wagon carrying supplies; the steamer J.B. Robertson; sternwheel steamers; an applied science class, McGill University; official farewell dinner to Ogilvie on his retirement as Governor, Dawson, Yukon; Dutch Harbour by evening, Aleutian Island; and the annual dinner of the London Invernesshire Association, London, England.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Ogilvie, William, 1846-1912 : Between 1875 and 1898, William Ogilvie, conducted a number of surveys and explorations in the Northwest Territories, notably in the Peace River and Mackenzie River districts and along the Alaska boundary. From 1898 to 1901, he was commissioner of the Yukon Territory.
