Fonds consists of textual records, 1909-1938, 1963-1971: essays, speeches, and articles dealing with forestry issues; survey reports for the Department of the Interior and Ontario Forest Service; miscellaneous material; handbooks and pamphlets; clippings and tear-sheets including articles by Grey Owl, Dallyn and other conservationalists; and scrapbooks of war momentoes and clippings dealing with forest conservation policy.
Fonds also contains photographs, ca. 1915-1957, depicting various tourist attractions in Canada; forestry operations in Canada; career of Gordon Mealey Dallyn.
Fonds also contains maps; 14 maps, 12 diagrames and 3 technical drawings 1862-1930, relate to the career of Gordon M. Dallyn, as assistant manager and associate editor of the Canadian Forestry Association; 21 maps, 1903-1918, consist (primarily) of maps pertaining to World War I, including maps of France and Belgium; and of an ordnance survey map of England and Wales, Folkestone and Dover District, dated 1903.
Fonds also contains medals, pins, and an object, 1909-1953, predominant 1909-1920, won by, accumulated by or awarded to Gordon Dallyn during his lifetime.
Dallyn, Gordon Mealey, 1891-1973 : Gordon Dallyn, forester, editor, was educated in Hamilton and Toronto, graduating from the University of Toronto in 1916 with a degree in Forestry Science. From 1915 to 1916 he served in the Canadian Officer Training Corps, and as an infantry Officer in France for which he was awarded the Military Cross.
As a forestry student, Dallyn conducted summer surveys in British Columbia and Saskatchewan. In 1919 he joined the Ontario Forest Service, acting as District Forester at Tweed from 1922 to 1926. He was then employed for nearly a decade as assistant manager and associate editor by the Canadian Forestry Association. From 1936 to 1959 he was executive secretary and editor of publications for the Canadian Geographical Society, renamed the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, in 1957.
