Moberley, Walter, fl. 1858-1870 : Walter Moberley began his engineering career on the construction of the Ontario, Simcoe and Huron Railway. At his own expense he went to British Columbia in 1858 to seek a suitable route for the proposed transcontinental railway. He laid out the site for New Westminster in 1859 and later located and supervised the construction of the Cariboo wagon road through the canyons of the Fraser and Thompson rivers. From 1864 to 1865 he represented Cariboo West in the British Columbia legislature, resigning to become Assistant Surveyor-General of B.C. He discovered the Eagle Pass through which the Canadian Pacific Railway was eventually routed. After several years in the United States he returned in 1870 to direct the mountain surveys for the Canadian Pacific. He is the author of several books.
