Sub-series consists of photocopies of near-daily memorandums sent to the Prime Minister by the Clerk of the Privy Council (PCO). Known as "clerk's notes" or "PCO notes", the memos provide non-partisan advice to the Prime Minister on issues of the day. Supporting documentation is attached to many of the memorandums. Attachments include, for example, reports, copies of earlier notes, letters received, draft outgoing letters, third-party publications, legal opinions, etc.).

Daily PCO notes produced under the Clerk of the Privy Council's signature were intended to provide the Prime Minister with non-partisan background information and advice on most matters of importance facing the Government of Canada.

Incoming PCO notes were reviewed every morning by staff in the Office of the Prime Minister - Deputy Chief of Staff and Policy units before being routed to the Prime Minister's "night file" (memos, letters, and notes to be reviewed that evening). After reviewing each PCO note, the Prime Minister returned the night file to his support staff. Original clerk's notes were then returned to the Privy Council Office, but the Prime Minister's Office filed a duplicate set within the Executive Office for future reference.
