This sub-series consists of maps created by the Grand Trunk Railway engineering department or by predecessor companies (Grand Trunk, Georgian Bay and Lake Erie Railway Company; Northern Railway Company of Canada; Nippising and Pacific Junction Railway; North and Northwestern Railways). The earliest maps date from the 1850s.

Many of the maps are oversized, and have been signed by Joseph Hobson, who was chief engineer of GTR from the 1870s to the early part of the 20th century. The maps have been hand-drawn, are primarily in colour, and display elaborate calligraphy. More specifically, along with the location of the railway line, there are stations, freight houses, gardens, semaphores, engine houses, roundhouses, fences, trestle bridges as well as information about local landowners and businesses. Some of the maps show evidence of multiple use, with pencil notes and dates showing corrections (thus, if a map were originally drawn in 1885, there can be corrections dating to as recent as 1912).

Other names of engineers on the maps include: I. Baker, Joseph Hobson, W.O. Tidswell, H.C. Stiff, Owen Jones, and Tom D. Hannaford, and A.J. Mclean.

The maps document station yards and portions of main lines between stations in various locations in Southern and Central Ontario, including the Toronto area.

Note on the state of conservation:

Most maps have been rolled up for a very long time, and are also very fragile. Steps are being taken to flatten and preserve the documents for the long term.
