This series covers the personal and family activities of this family and the ancestors of the spouses, their immigration to Canada, their settlement in the country, the lives of their children and grandchildren. The files are classified by the last name of the families, i.e., from the most distant ancestor to the most recent. The documents relate to the origin of the family names "Doherty," "Barnard" and "Elliott." They include coats of arms, genealogical notes, genealogy-related correspondence, transcripts of old documents and a few printed brochures. Several files contain legal documents such as wills, marriage contracts and notarized documents related to property. Others are more personal, containing letters, literary texts and press clippings, and relate to special events of members of the Doherty and Barnard families. Some files relate to academic activities, some of the most important being a student journal written by Charles Joseph Doherty when he was 15, his course notes from when he was a professor of the Faculty of Law at McGill University, and documents related to his military activities with the 65th Regiment sent west during the Louis Riel Rebellion. A few records deal with Charles Joseph Doherty's activities during Home Rule in Ireland. There are also press clippings about his career and death.
