The Health Services and Promotions Branch (HSPB) is the responsible agency for the development and promotion of support measures designed to preserve the health and well-being of Canadians. Working in the areas of advice and assistance for community health, mental health, institutional and professional services and facilities, the Branch strives to improve the quality, accessibility, delivery and cost-effectiveness of these services. In addition, it works with the provincial governments to ensure that all Canadians have reasonable access to medical services through the maintenance of the hospital insurance programme. The Branch is divided into several directorates: Health Insurance, Health Services, Health Promotion, and Extramural Research. In 1993, the Health Services and Promotions Branch was merged with portions of the former Social Service Programs Branch and renamed the Health Programs and Promotions Branch (HPPB)., This accession includes inquiries from the public regarding topics related to the programs and activities carried out under the mandate of HSPB, general subject files, and two bodies of grant files. The subject files contain records from several of the internal divisions of the branch, including the Child and Maternal Health Division (later Child and Adult Health), Community Health Services, Dental Health, Mental Health, and Rehabilitation. Topics covered include: health hazards such as accidents and poisonings; day care; abortion and family planning; diseases; child abuse; community groups; and rehabilitation personnel. Boxes 8 to 44 contain individual grant files for sustaining grants to national voluntary health organizations, such as the Schizophrenia Society of Canada, the Canadian Public Health Association, the Victorian Order of Nurses for Canada, and the Canadian Council for School Health Education. Boxes 95 to 101 hold individual grant files under the Victims of Violence program. These grant files contain applications, approvals/rejections, evaluation forms, auditor's reports and other financial statements, related correspondence and publications.
