This sub-series consists of records pertaining to the management of vessels, the transportation of grain and employee records. There are various financial statements such as ledgers, balance sheets, sale agreements and bill of sales, mortgages, budget comparative statements, profit and loss statements, monthly statements on operating expenses and various ship statements, financial analyses and studies on the Steamship Division's activities.
Records in this sub-series were produced by Lloyd's Register. This international organization provided N.M. Paterson Steamship Ltd. various services such as registration, insurance, licences and certificates for crews and vessels. The Lloyd' system of registration provides detailed information on vessels, ownership and crewmembers. The documentation consists of crew lists, trip report statements, loading registers, many agreements for transportation, safety plans, maneuvering data for vessels, etc.
Also included are contracts for grain cargo construction; inspection and test reports; inventories of officers; appointments of administrative personnel; lists of captains, chief engineers and mates; notices to mariners and material inventories; various correspondence with several companies regarding movements of their ships and work maintenance; as well as letters which provide a very detailed view of the Paterson company's operations from supplies used to costs and labour problems.
The sub-series also contains correspondence with the Dominion Marine Association and Canadian Ship Owners Association regarding the topic of new regulations for operations. These associations were formed with the idea that some of the industry's problems could best be handled by central agencies better equipped to handle present and future needs. Gradually, in twentieth century, they began to be more concerned with operations and less with policy.
