Brockville and Ottawa Railway Company : The Brockville and Ottawa Railway Company (B & O) was incorporated in the Statutes of the Province of Upper Canada Act 16 Chapter 106 on April 22, 1853, with the intent to build a railway line from Brockville to Smith's Falls and then to Arnprior and Pembroke, with a branch line to Perth, Ontario. Construction started from Brockville in 1854 to link up with the Grand Trunk Railway which was then under construction along Lake Ontario and the St Lawrence River from Toronto to Montreal. Rails were first laid in 1858 and the Brockville to Smith's Falls portion of the line opened in in several stages: Brockville to Smith's Falls and Smith's Falls to Perth (February 1859); Smith's Falls to Almonte (August 1859); Almonte to Arnprior (December 1864); Arnprior to Sand Point (September 1865).

The Canada Central Railway, which was incorporated in 1861, opened a line from Carleton Place to Lebreton Flats near Ottawa in 1870, and leased portions of the B & O line during the 1870s, amalgamated with the Brockville and Ottawa Railway in 1878 under the name of Canada Central Railway (CCR) in the Statutes of Canada Act 41 Chapter 35. In 1881, the combined B&O/CCR was amalgamated with the Canadian Pacific Railway Company. The original B and O line is considered to be one of the original components of the Canadian Pacific Railway in Eastern Canada.
