These materials were added to the Canadian War Records Office official photographic record, to broaden the photographic record of the First World War and to provide coverage of events in Canada. Sub-sub series level records document: Training camps set up in Canada and England to train soldiers and Royal Flying Corps aircrews for war operations in Europe and elsewhere; images documenting war industries producing military equipment and munitions in Canada; Aerial photographs taken by the Royal Flying Corps in Europe, used by Canadian military authorities for operational/planning purposes; unit panoramas taken early in the War in Canada, panoramic collages of the front lines in France and Belgium used for military reconnaissance/planning purposes; and a limited collection of photographs about the internment operations of Militia and Defence, under the 1914 War Measures Act.

Custodial history:

This material was sought out by military authorities at the Department of Militia and Defence to supplement the Canadian War Records Office's photographic record of the First World War. The material remained with the Department of National Defence until transferred to the Public Archives in 1963.
