Images taken during the Great War (1914-1919) in England, Canada, and with Canadian Expeditionary Force troop transports crossing the Atlantic. This series was intended to complement the "O" series images taken at the Front. There are also a small number of photos taken in France, which came from a Canadian War Records Office appeal for photographs of pre-May 1916 Canadian Expeditionary Force actions (before the first "O" series images(mikan no. 4532467).

The "M" prefix series represents "Miscellaneous".

Custodial history:

The photographic collection of the Canadian War Records Office was transferred from London, England, to the Department of Militia and Defence in Ottawa in May, 1919. The material remained with the Department of National Defence until transferred to the Public Archives in 1963.
