The TransCanada Highway Campgrounds and Picnic Area program was developed to encourage provinces to build and maintain campgrounds and picnic areas adjacent to the TransCanada Highway as rest areas for travelers with consistent facilities and signage. It ran from 1958-1966 under the Ministry of Northern Affairs and Natural Resources, but requests for extensions to the program from a few provinces and other issues stretches correspondence into 1970. Responsibility of the program was transferred to the Ministry of Mines and Technical Survey in 1966, but in light of the program's end, administration ended up remaining with the Ministry of Northern Affairs.Source:Government
