There are several categories of records in this accession. Sealed envelopes (boxes 499848-850) contain inmate control cards dating from the early 1930's, organized by prisoner number. The cards contain such information as name, alias, occupation, marital state, country of birth, religion, past record, place of trial, date and length of sentence, crime committed, age, weight, height, physical complexion, eyes, hair, special marks or features, alcoholic habits (abstainer, temperate, intemperate), date of discharge, and (on the reverse of the card) an area for remarks by prison staff. Some of the cards also have an attached penitentiary reception card which goes into much more detail concerning physical and mental health, racial origin, language, birthplace of parents, etc. The admission forms on shannon files (boxes 499851-861) are also organized by prisoner number and contain much of the same information as the inmate control cards, only in a different format. The transfer forms on shannon files (boxes 499862-870) document the transfer of prisoners from the B.C. Penitentiary to other correctional institutions in Canada. They contain less personal information than the other two types of records noted above: The transfer forms record the name, prisoner number, name of discharging and receiving institutions, dates, authorizing signatures, and a checklist of documents on files enclosed with the transfer (these documents are not, however, part of this series). Collectively, these records are a snapshot of the social composition of convicts, the patterns of crime and sentencing, and the operation of a federal prison.

These records were originally held in British Columbia. They were transferred to the National Capital Region in 2016 and are available for consultation there.
