Fonds consists of editorial cartoons drawn by Franklin for the Globe and Mail and The Financial Post between 1973 and 1988. The works depict provincial, national and international political figures, as well as personnalities from the financial and cultural arenas, such as Pierre Trudeau, Michael Wilson, Kim Campbell, Joe Clark, Don Mazenkowski, John Turner, Jean Chrétien, Paul Martin, René Lévesque, David Peterson, Bill Davis, Bob Rae, Brian Peckford, John Crow, Robert Campeau, Floyd Laughren, Edgar Bronfman, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, Margaret Thatcher, Mikhail Gorbachev, Leonid Brezhnev, Ferdinand Marcos, Menachem Begin, Helmut Kohl and Henry Kissinger. A wide range of national and international political and financial issues are covered, including NAFTA, the crash of Olympia and York, various corporate mergers, the Canadian constitution, the Canada Post automation, health care, apartheid, the nuclear arms race, the Iran-Contra affair, and the crises in South Africa, Ethiopia, Uganda, the Middle East, Libya and Iran. Provincial political issues include Great Lakes pollution, Ontario gas pricing, Ontario Censor Board, and the billing practices of the Ontario Medical Association. The fonds also includes a Christmas 1887 copy of "Grip" with a cover featuring Charles Tupper, Grover Cleveland and the fishery commission; an original cartoon strip of "Beetle Bailey" by Mort Walker; and an original cartoon strip of "Boner's Ark" by Addison (a.k.a. Mort Walker).
