This map depicts the parishes of St. Norbert and St. Vital in the southern part of present-day Winnipeg. It indicates lot numbers, acreage, description of vegetation and shows by colour cultivated lands, prairie and meadowlands and woodlands. Manuscript features appear frequently on the map as corrections to acreage, outlines of routes and the name "Alexander / Alexandre" in top left corner. As is typical of Métis settlements, the land is divided into long and narrow river lots. The historic Métis settlement on the Rivière Sale (later known as the La Salle River) became the Roman Catholic parish of St. Norbert in 1857. The parish of St. Vital, home of Louis Riel, was founded in 1860.
