This map depicts parts of the parishes of St. Johns, St. James, and St. Charles, in the northwest of present-day Winnipeg along the Assiniboine. It shows acreage of all lots with some of the names of the owners. As is typical of Métis settlements, the land is divided into long and narrow river lots.. This map shows the outer two miles of these parishes, which were used for hay and pasture and were highly contested between the Métis and later settlers. It also depicts the development of settler municipalities, with their square lot system, around and over the pre-existing Métis system. The church at St. John's was founded in 1820 and became the first Anglican parish of Red River Settlement. The Anglican parish of St. James was founded in 1853. The Roman Catholic and French-speaking parish of St. Charles was also founded in the 1850s.
