Morrisseau, Norval, 1932-2007 : Norval Morrisseau, an Anishinaabe artist also known as Copper Thunderbird, was born on March 14, 1932, on the Sand Point Ojibwe Reserve near Beardmore, Ontario. Some sources quote him as saying he was born in nearby Fort William, now part of Thunder Bay, on the same day in 1931. He founded the Woodland School (style of art), also known as Legend or Medicine Painting. He was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1973 and was awarded the Order of Canada in 1978. In 1989, Morrisseau was the only Canadian painter invited to exhibit in Paris to mark the bicentennial of the French Revolution. He died in Toronto on December 4, 2007.
